Following reports of operating a cricket betting operation during India’s recent test match against England, the Pimpri-Chinchwad police have detained four more bookies.
During a cricket betting event on March 27, 2021, nearly 33 suspects were arrested and remanded in jail.
Four more people have been added to the list and remanded in police custody until April 6, according to a court in Vadgaon Maval.
International betting rackets
Commissioner of Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Krishna Prakash said: “We cannot deny their link with international betting rackets. They were found in various locations as due to Covid rules, they could not enter the location as rightful viewers. The participants are generally people from the middle and upper-middle class.”
Police also obtained reports of 12 betting applications used by the men implicated in the betting scandal, according to Prakash.
Further 24 suspects
Police are actively looking for 24 more suspects accused of being involved in the crime, including bookies from numerous states around the country, and have formed four teams to track down the offenders and conduct further inquiries.
“There is a possibility that the accused are linked to international bookies,” Prakash said at a press conference.
Five of the 37 people convicted was thought to have tested positive for Covid.
