Betway is preparing for its biggest Spanish marketing investment since entering into talks to become Sevilla FC ‘s official shirt sponsor in time for the start of the La Liga football season 2020/2021.
Spanish football news outlet Palco23 announced that Betway is leading the way to replace Sevilla’s leading sponsor Marathonbet, known as the largest football club in Andalusia.
Following the sudden postponement of the 2019/2020 season in La Liga, Marathonbet is said to have withdrawn its Seville sponsorship, ending the terms of its current two-year deal.
Meanwhile, Betway, which aims to further develop its presence at La Liga, has offered Seville a € 5 million per season contract, reflecting the largest sponsorship the club has ever had.
Betway has an proven Spanish football presence, having undertaken a series of sponsorships during the summer of 2018 with smaller La Liga clubs in Alaves, CD Leganes and Levante UD.
Nonetheless, the proposed sponsorship of Betway in Sevilla will bear inherent risks, as Spain’s coalition government moves to impose a new federal code for all vertical gambling.
The approved Royal Decree on Advertising, banning all betting-related advertising during sports broadcasts, was fast-tracked by Spain’s Ministry of Consumer Affairs this April.
This move has been criticised by Spanish football clubs and national broadcasters, arguing that incumbents were granted no grace period to fulfil existing contracts.
Consumer Affairs Minister Alberto Garzon sanctioned the decision to enforce the Royal Decree, which explained it had been taken as an emergency civic protection.
Garzon, the minister responsible for the reform of Spain’s leading gambling, has previously said ‘football has been flooded by betting partnerships’
Garzon maintained that the Royal Decree represents the ‘first phase’ of the overhaul of gambling, in which the new government will in the coming months implement further restrictions and tighter industry monitoring.
