The mobile and online sports platform Betfred USA launched Tuesday at Grand Falls Casino & Golf Resort in Larchwood, Iowa.
Customers must first use the Betfred app in the casino, in compliance with Iowa state legislation passed in 2019, before it can be used for mobile sports wagering. This applies to all wagering mobile sports in the state, and shall remain the rule through January 1, 2021.
Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds permitted casinos and race tracks to reopen at a capacity of 50 percent as of June 1, among other businesses. Later that month the Iowa legislature voted to ban the use of credit cards through Iowa-based casinos to wager on sporting events.
The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission approved betting on sports through contests in May but turned down a formal request from the Iowa Gaming Association, which supports the state’s 19 casinos, to allow casinos to wager on sports.
