The WPT Online Series Championship has begun with the launch of the first of four Day 1 flights seeing 808 entries with a $3,200 buy-in. That already means that the $5 million promised prizepool is almost halfway there, with $2,424,000 brought in from the entries so far, amazing stuff from the World Poker Tour and online partypoker, where the tournament is being held.
It was Dutch player Abdelhakim Zoufri who had the chip lead, piling up 791,877 chips at the end of the match, out of the 808 entries on Day 1a. With over a million dollars in live results, Zoufri is looking to add his already-impressive poker resume to the very first wPT Online Championship Main Event. He may have previously won Poker ‘s 2016 Master Classics, the 2018 Master Classics of Poker High Roller but he won’t take anything for granted against the remaining competition, 141 of which survived Day 1a on the online partypoker.
Some young players are chasing Zoufri away, with Canada’s Kevin Macdonald fastest on his heels. Macdonald bagged 668,081 chips with another player from the Netherlands joining 3rd place in the end-of-night chipcounts, with Julio Ribeiro totalling 590,228 in digital poker.
In the chasing pack elsewhere, the triple WSOP bracelet champion and mixed game specialist Benny Glaser (548,623) looms big in the leader’s rear-view mirror, with Canadian player Guillaume Nolet (443,152) still battling hard to hold on Zoufri’s coattails.
Other poker superstars still in dispute after Day 1a feature the charismatic Simon Higgins (436,550), Timothy Adams (374,556), Matas Cimbolas (364,894), Belgian manager Davidi Kitai (330,311), Michael Addamo (288,534), former WPT Main Event winner Dylan Linde (253,798), former WPT back-to-back champion Marvin Rettenmaier (246,866),
There will be three more flights from WPT Online Championship Main Event Day 1 with the Main Event coming to a close on Wednesday, May 20. Day 1b kicks off on May 17 at 6:00 GMT, with Day 1c and the turbo-structured Day 1d kicking off on May 18 at 12 noon and GMT at 5 pm.
