In a week when the entire poker, let alone the World Tour, is in mourning for Mike Sexton ‘s passing, it may be appropriate for the man that the poker game, and especially in the World Online Championships of the WPT, is pushing ever forward.
As recent as July this year, the WPT Champions Cup was renamed in honour of the late, great Mike Sexton, and the World Poker Tour Main Event World Online Championships Day 1a kicked off in fine style on Monday.
Taking place on Partypoker, for whom Sexton was the Chairman until his passing, the Main Event’s first flight attracted a total of 521 entries with a $10,000 buy-in from each player ensuring a $5.2 million prize pool has already been reached.
Just 80 players remained at the close of play, and those six dozen and spare players will advance to a Day 2 that already looks like the game we all love is packed with superstars.
The overall chip leader at the end of the day’s play was Slovenian player Blaž Žerjav who piled up a whopping 4.4 million chips. But he wasn’t the only player to bag big, as some of the game’s giants are looming over his shoulder.
The Polish poker sensation, Dominik Panka, came in second in chips, while Shaun Deeb was just one more place behind. It’s impossible to think of Deeb without recounting some of his at-felt antics, and if we failed to highlight the incredible slowroll Deeb laid down on Mike ‘The Mouth’ Matusow just two years ago, it would be remiss of us.
There are plenty of players making Day 2 from the WPT Champions Club, meaning in the past they have won a bona fide WPT Main Event. These include: Dylan Linde (1.9 million), Ole Schemion (1.7 million), Juha Helppi (1.5 million), Scott Margereson (809,000), GPI legend Alex Foxen (676,000), and Ryan Riess (400,000), a former WSOP Main Event winner. Others to make the Day 2 Table Draw include ambassadors Dzmitry Urbanovich and Philipp Gruissem as partypokers.
With other big names like Unibet Open tournament director Kenny Hallaert (1.7 million), British high roller crusher Jack Sinclair (1.2 million), American poker legend Steve O’Dwyer (1 million), Australia ‘s finest modern player Kahle Burns (950,000), WSOP Main Event finalists Jorryt van Hoof (780,000), Joao Vieira (640,000), Alexandros Kolonias (638,000), Chance Kornuth (622,000), and Stefan Schil Vieira (640,000),
World Poker Tour World Online Championships Main Event Day 1b takes place this coming Sunday, September 13 at 7.05pm GMT, with a $10,300 buy-in that can be minimised if you qualify for it via satellites that are now running on Partypoker.
