After two months of declining sports betting handle and sales, Oregon saw a month-over-month rise in April.
Oregon posted a sports betting handle of $25.3 million in April, up 5.3 percent from $24.1 million in March. In April, revenue increased even further, reaching $2.7 million (GGR), nearly doubling March’s $1.4 million and representing a 98.6 percent month-over-month increase.
After a record-breaking $34.9 million in January, Oregon sports betting saw lower handles in February and March ($29.6 million) before bouncing back in April.
Since the Oregon Lottery’s Scoreboard app does not allow college sports betting, several players were unable to wager on the NCAA Tournament in March. To bet on college football, residents must fly to one of the state’s two tribal casinos.
Basketball was the most bet on sport in the state in March, with $13.6 million in wagers. The top five sports in terms of handle were baseball ($4.3 million), soccer ($2.6 million), hockey ($1.45 million), and mixed martial arts ($784,973). According to Oregon Lottery figures, parlay bets totaled $6.6 million in April, up marginally from $6.5 million in March.
Unlike most other states, the Oregon Lottery operates a single-source sports betting industry. In comparison to other states with open markets with many operators, Oregon’s scheme restricts players’ options.
House Bill 2127 is now left waiting
House Bill 2127 will alter Oregon’s sports betting landscape. The bill will establish the Oregon Racing Commission as the state’s new sports betting regulator, allowing more operators and allowing mobile and retail sports betting in Oregon.
According to the state legislature’s website, the bill has not moved since its first reading on Jan. 11 until being returned to the speaker’s desk, where it was referred to the general government on Jan. 19.
If passed, the bill would open the door to more operators entering the state, offering players more betting choices than the state lottery’s Scoreboard app.
