Indiana Sports Betting Up 7.6% In May

In May, Indiana’s sports wagering handle increased over the previous month, with bettors placing $254.4 million in wagers at the state’s online and retail sportsbooks. This was up 7.6 percent from April, when the total sports wagering handle, including online and retail, was $236.4 million.

Sports betting is available at nine casinos and two racinos in Indiana. In January, the state set a new record for sports betting handle with $348.2 million.

While handle increased month over month, taxable adjusted gross income for the state’s sports wagering businesses decreased. The taxable AGR was $18.9 million in May. The taxable AGR fell by 6.1 percent from April’s $20.1 million. The decline in taxable AGR clearly resulted in a reduction in state tax revenue – $1.79 million in May, down 6.1 percent from April’s $1.91 million.

Traditionally, internet sports betting accounted for the majority of sports wagering revenue. According to figures provided Friday by the Indiana Gaming Commission, mobile betting generated $234 million in May, accounting for roughly 92 percent of the month’s total handle.

Top sportsbooks in Indiana

DraftKings (with Ameristar Casino) and FanDuel (with Blue Chip Casino) were the two sportsbooks with the most handle in Indiana. Despite having the greatest handle, FanDuel took home more money in gross receipts. The total handle for the DraftKings Sportsbook was $81.8 million, with gross receipts of $2.94 million. The total handle at FanDuel Sportsbook was $79.3 million, with $7.63 million in gross revenue. BetMGM Sportsbook (Belterra Casino) came in second with a handle of $29.34 million and gross receipts of $2.52 million.

Barstool Sportsbook joined the Indiana sports betting fray in May. (with Hollywood Lawrenceburg). Starting on May 18, Barstool has a handle of $6.32 million ($268,000 gross receipts). PointsBet Sportsbook, another Hollywood Casino subsidiary, generated $11.3 million in handle ($1 million in gross receipts).

The May casino win (tables plus slots) for the Indiana brick-and-mortar casino business was $241.4 million. This was a 14.1 percent increase over April’s total ($211.7 million). Gaming’s taxable AGR was $212.2 million, up 4.6 percent from April’s figure of $202.9 million.
