Svenska Spel has announced that the 2021 version of its prestigious ‘Elite Sports Scholarship’ programme has received a record number of applications.
Svenska Spel, Sweden’s state-owned lottery and gaming monopoly, has run a sports scholarship programme in collaboration with Riksidrottsförbundet, Sweden’s Confederation for Sports, for the past 40 years.
Svenska Spel funds 50 amateur athletes with SEK 50,000 (€5,000) each year to pursue their respective sports. All winners will be funded by Riksidrottsförbundet athlete services as part of the award.
Svenska Spel told national media that it had received a total of 600 applications for its 2021 sports scholarship, outnumbering all previous years, when the programme averaged 400 individual applicants.
The firm’s latest group-wide brand marketing plan, which centred on raising public awareness of Svenska Spel’s civic responsibilities as Sweden’s gambling monopoly, drove uptake in its scholarship programme, according to Svenska Spel.
Svenska Spel’s Sponsorship Project Manager, Linn Rydstedt said: “Svenska Spel is Swedish sport’s biggest partner, from broad to elite, and we want to be able to offer the opportunity to combine both elite sports and studies.”
