Sportium, Grupo Cirsa’s sports betting division, has reached an agreement with Unidad Editorial SA, a Spanish news publisher, to take ownership of the Marca Apuestas (MarcaApuestas.es) sportsbook brand.
Marca Apuestas is the sports betting division of Marca (Marca.com), Spain’s most widely circulated daily sports newspaper and online news site.
Sportium has taken control of ‘Unidad Editorial Juegos,’ the registered company that operates the Marca Apuestas brand, according to Merca2.es, a Spanish business news outlet.
Meanwhile, Sportium Chief Executive Alberto Eljarrat and CIRSA Digital Director Mikel Lopez de Torre have been appointed general secretaries of the company, replacing Unidad Editorial executives Nicola Speroni and Stefania Bedogni, according to the Spanish business registry.
Bet on Red Digital
Marca Apuestas’ DGOJ online gambling licence was transferred to ‘Bet on Red Digital,’ a new subsidiary established by Sportium, as part of further ownership changes.
To coincide with the approval of Spain’s revised Gambling Act regime, which regulates online gambling businesses, Unidad Editorial launched the Marca Apuestas brand in 2012.
The Marca Apuestas brand, however, would be removed if it failed to meet Unidad Editorial’s commercial demands, as Marca based its publishing platform on serving Spanish sports betting’s new incumbents.
Unidad Editorial will form a new ‘Juegos’ subsidiary in 2016, following a revision of its business strategy, relaunching Marca Apuestas in collaboration with Playtech Plc as Juegos lead igaming and sports betting platform provider.
Unidad Editorial and Sportium decided not to reveal details about the ownership of Marca’s La Liga and ACB Basketball fantasy sports games, which are owned by the Juegos subsidiary.
