Sorare, the fantasy football operator, has acquired a new strategic advisor, Gerard Piqué, FC Barcelona and the Spanish national team defender.
Sorare hopes that, in addition to the “significant investment” he has made in the brand, Piqué’s commitment would help grow its global footprint and enter new fan bases around the world.
In addition, Piqué and his new colleagues at Sorare will seek to get more players and teams into the game from the world’s top 20 leagues.
Currently, Sorare is licenced to 100 different teams, including European giants Bayern Munchen, Paris St Germain, Juventus and Real Madrid.
The organisation will also obtain assistance from Emmanuel Seugé, founder of the American Cassius Family fund and former CocaCola marketer, who will help with branding acumen in the global sports industry.
Prior to joining Barcelona’s eight-time La Liga and three-time Champions League winning team, Piqué won the Premier League and UEFA Champions League with Manchester United.
He took an active interest in sports media and business outside football, such as establishing a partnership with the International Tennis Federation (ITF) to modernise the Davis Cup competition, as well as acquiring FC Andorra, the Spanish Segunda Division B team.
