The future of Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling has been a hot topic of discussion in recent months, with the 26-year-old finding himself out of Pep Guardiola’s starting XI for much of the season.
He has started just three games in the Premier League this season, making a further six appearances as a substitute as the trend that started earlier in the calendar year has continued.
Sterling was regularly on the bench as City fired their way to a third Premier League title in four seasons, but was rejuvenated over the summer as he starred for England in their run to the European Championship Final.
Scoring each of his country’s first three goals at the tournament including the opener against Germany in the Round of 16 at Wembley, there was the feeling that those games could be the kick start he needed to get back in favour at the Etihad Stadium.
However, that has not been the case and there is plenty of speculation circulating surrounding his future and a potential departure from the north west. Sterling has done little to cool the fire either.
Speaking at the FT Business of Sport US summit, Sterling said: “If there was an opportunity to go somewhere else, (for more game time), I would be open to it at this moment in time.
“As I said, football is the most important thing to me – challenges that I have set myself from a young age and dreams as well, to play abroad.
“As an English player all I know is the Premier League and I have always had something down (in me) that maybe one day I would love to play abroad to see how I would come up against that challenge.”
In the wake of those comments, Paddy Power has created a market for punters to bet on Sterling’s next club before February 3rd 2022.

Where Next For Sterling?
It’s clear that a player of his talent and ability can not continue playing a bit-part role at club level, particularly if he wants to guarantee himself a starting role at the World Cup in 12 months time. Gareth Southgate has shown plenty of loyalty to Sterling, but that will wear thin if he still isn’t getting regular game time over the course of the next year.
His comments about playing abroad have naturally seen two foreign outfits placed as the favourites to sign him. The most likely is Barcelona, who are currently rebuilding as a club following financial difficulties and they have previously been linked with a move for the QPR academy product. They are a 5/1 shot at this moment in time.
Joining them are La Liga rivals Real Madrid at 9/1. They are pretty well stacked with players in wide areas in their squad, although both Gareth Bale and Eden Hazard are now the wrong side of 30 and not producing the levels they once did in their career. PSG are the only other option abroad, albeit at 20/1 and would likely leave Sterling in a similar position to the one which he currently finds himself behind Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.
If he were to stay in the Premier League then Tottenham Hotspur are the current favourites at 12/1. A native Londoner, a move closer to home could potentially suit him and there is the Harry Kane factor that could open up the possibility of a swap deal if City make a return offer for the England captain. Spurs do look a far more attractive proposal now they have Antonio Conte in charge.
Arsenal are next at 20/1 if Sterling fancies a reunion with former City assistant manager Mikel Arteta, who is showing the framework of putting together an exciting team at the Emirates. Then comes the least fancied of the lot, Liverpool, at 40/1. It’s difficult to imagine the Anfield faithful accepting their former winger back with open arms given the nature of his departure from the club in 2015.
