Former Rangers player Giovanni van Bronckhorst has been installed as the early favourite to take over the managerial vacancy at Ibrox following Steven Gerrard’s departure to Aston Villa.
van Bronckhorst, who spent three seasons as a Rangers player between 1998 and 2001, is reportedly keen on the job and would also bring back former coach Jan Wouters as his assistant manager.
The 46-year-old is currently out of work after leaving Guangzhou after 11 months in charge due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Prior to that, he had a very successful spell with Feyenoord between 2015 and 2019, winning the club their first Eredivisie title since 1999 in the 2016/17 season alongside two KNVB Cups and two Johan Cruyff Shields.
He also had a trophy-laden stint at Ibrox during his three years as a player, winning two Scottish Premiership titles, two Scottish Cups and a Scottish League Cup.
He recently admitted he is ready to return to management, saying: “I’ve had a lot of time lately to be at home and spend a lot of time in my foundation.
“That was a bit more difficult in recent years. Now I have the sense and energy to take on a great challenge.
“It is important in that regard – which club is it, and does it suit me?”

The Other Contenders
Outside of van Bronckhorst, the next favourite is another former Rangers player in Russell Martin at 7/2. He had a brief stint on loan at Ibrox in the 2017/18 season and has earned a glowing reputation during his short time as a manager. The 35-year-old is one of the most exciting young British coaches in the game, but would be difficult to prize away from Swansea whom he only joined in August.
Behind him is former Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes, who had eight successful years at Pittodrie before his spell came to an end at the closing of last season. He is a 4/1 shot to be the new man at Rangers and is another contender to have spent time there in his playing career between 1995 and 2000. He can be backed at 4/1.
Should Rangers want to go for another big name similar to Gerrard then their options include John Terry (5/1), Frank Lampard (14/1) and Gennaro Gattuso (20/1). The Glasgow club also have the option to play it safe and go for a member of Gerrard’s backroom staff in either Gary McAllister or Michael Beale, who are available at 16/1 and 25/1 respectively.
