Newgioco Kicks Off Sports Wagering In Italy

Newgioco Group Inc said last week that it had kicked off sports wagering via its Italian online betting platform and will include the League of Legends, DOTA, Starcraft, as well as NBA Basketball, Formula One and MotoGP sports versions.

In a tweet, the multinational sports betting and gaming technology firm headquartered in Toronto said it took off on April 3 with the esports wagering.

“Clients of our online operators through Multigioco in Italy are now able to wager on the outcome of esports competitions of League of Legends, DOTA, Starcraft, as well as esports versions of NBA Basketball, Formula One and MotoGP,” Newgioco added.

Because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the company temporarily shut down 150 betting shop locations throughout Italy, but the organisation emphasised that the closure of the physical locations would not impact its ongoing online and mobile operations.

The wagering on esports is simply meant to “fill the gap” created by the suspension of live sports and the reduced availability of specialised sporting events, the company said. People can now use personal computers, tablets and cell phones to position bets across all online platforms.

Michele Ciavarella, CEO of the Newgioco group, said the organisation is “absolutely committed” to keeping its “full team employed” during the global pandemic given the difficulties the markets face.

The first result of our whole team approach is the launch of esports in the online channel in Italy within one week of regulatory approval,” Ciavarella said.

“The rapid go-to-market of esports offerings reflects the talent and efficiency of our design team and flexibility of our Elys platform. The focus is now to accelerate the development of our unique US sports betting platform in preparation for the re-opening of markets once the crisis subsides,” he added.

After the government-imposed quarantine took effect on March 8, the company said it has been handling about 200 to 300 online account applications daily.

Newgioco primarily conducts its business through an internet-based betting distribution network on its website, as well as in betting shops in retail communities across Italy. This provides a range of products and services for casual gaming, such as sports betting, virtual sports, online casino, poker, bingo, mobile games and slots.

The group also owns and operates revolutionary betting platform software which provides B2B and B2C bet-processing for casinos, sports betting, and other online and land-based gaming operators.
