On Thursday the NBA 2K League announced that one of it’s prominent players Basil “24 K Dropoff” has been banned from competing in the league after leaking information to a gambler.
“After an investigation, the NBA 2K league determined that Rose violated the league’s rules against tipping on NBA 2K League games by providing inside information to an individual who Rose knew was involved in betting on NBA 2K League games,” a league statement reads. “The investigation did not find that Rose attempted to fix or otherwise improperly participate in any NBA 2K League game.”
If the only punishment given to Rose is the ban from playing organised video games, then he is getting off lightly. If participants in sports are caught in gambling systems, federal officials will usually come knocking.
But for now there’s no word about Rose facing any criminal charges.
But we would assume he and esports will be firmly on the agencies overseeing illegal gambling activities radar.
And with the NBA actively plunging its toes into gambling waters and supervising the NBA 2K League, commissioner Adam Silver is also certainly paying attention.
