The series’ final World Poker Tour World Online Championships event saw Michael Addamo win the heads-up battle against Isaac Haxton after both players won $1.2 million in winnings for themselves. The fact that just half the headlines are for the winners indicates what a sensational finale it really was.
The day began with the remaining seven players, but only six were to be charged. British player Charlie Godwin, who won her $100,000 buy-in from a $109 satellite ticket to party poker, came to play 7th in chips. The ROI on the ticket depended on who was the first to bust,
It was all on the first player to bust, with almost a quarter of a million dollars to finish sixth and none to come seventh, and as it happened, it took an hour of nail-biting action, with Daniel Dvoress the unfortunate player leaving with nothing. His removal, Busting to Sergi Reixach, meant that everybody was profitable, although some were much more than others.
German player Christoph Vogelsang will be next to go, and Linus Loeliger couldn’t withstand short-drifting after he quit.
As if things weren’t going like Godwin ‘s dream anymore, it was about to get better. A whole lot better. With four players left, Sergi Reixach looked like a clear heads-up favourite, or at least a third. Instead, the Spaniard imploded with a smart Godwin fold, frittering away 50 big blinds, busting Isaac Haxton and vaulting the gleeful Godwin to 3rd place when her last 15 big blinds soon after came in and lost, collecting $620,000 from a $109 satellite.
Heads-up, both Addamo and Haxton were similar in chips and negotiated a deal for the eventual winner that there will be $30,000 left over. Both players would enjoy the lead at different stages, but Haxton was unable to recover as it swung to Addamo for the last time and the title belonged to the Australian, with both men enjoying a profit of a million dollars.
A spectacular win for Adaamo and a completely enjoyable World Poker Tour online sequence, with several new champions adding their names to the WPT Mike Sexton Champions Cup, a tournament that correlates to the historic contribution of the late, great man to poker in general and the World Poker tour in particular.
