As many start looking forward to 2020, Macau authorities are excited about the number of tourists visiting the city in 2019. According to law enforcement officials, that number reached more than 39 million, a 10 percent increase over the number of tourists in 2018.
Over 39.4 million visitors have arrived in Macau over the past year, police say. The fact that 28 million people came from mainland China was also included in the study. Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, the United States, South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, the Philippines, India, China, and Thailand were other regions that usually sent visitors to Macau.
Aside from the fact that the total number of hotel rooms available was down slightly, the increased number of tourists was a great sign. Despite the fact that new hotels have been opening in the city since the end of 2018, the overall occupancy of rooms has dropped by 1.7%. This was attributed to the fact that the neighbourhood was undergoing several upgrades, with several near completion.
There are currently 18 hotel projects under construction or renovation, with 24 future projects scheduled to start this year at some point. A further 11,000 rooms are planned to be added to the city. It is estimated that most of the upgrades will be finished in 2020.
It was expected that 40 million visitors would be seen by the city in 2019, but a combination of factors seems to have stood in their way of reaching that figure. It includes the war of trade between the United States and China, as well as a slowing Chinese economy. Hong Kong’s political turmoil was also a factor, as this region’s visitors have seen a rapid decline over the past six months.
It could be a big one for the city this year. This should have a dramatic impact on China’s economy as the trade war looks like it’s over now, with an initial agreement reached between the United States and China. Moreover, a recent study found that 70 percent of tourists from India who had visited Macau intend to return. However, 96 percent said they were going to recommend the city to friends and family.
Last year, more than 120,000 tourists from India came to Macau. If the numbers revealed in the survey proved to be true, the number of 2019 is likely to be dwarfed by the number of tourists for 2020. Clearly there seems to be a lot to look forward to in Macau in 2020.
