A Beginner’s Guide

Let us start with the basics before jumping into the game and learning how to place bets. A game of tennis consists of two players playing against each other on a rectangular court. A net divides the rectangular court into equal parts at the centre. Additionally, the half-court you play in has two sub-divisions called the deuce side to the right and the ad side that is to the left.

There is a service box that runs from the net to the edge of the court. While serving, the player tries to place the ball into the opponent’s service box in a diagonal direction. You will also have alleys present in the court. However, they are in play only when there is a doubles game.

Now that you learned about the court layout’s basics, it is time to look at the scoring mechanism. It would be best if you remembered that every player begins a tennis match with a score of zero. However, it is not the regular zero. In tennis, when a player has zero, it is called “love.” Every point that a player wins earns him or her 15 points. The following point gives 30, and the third point takes the score to 40.

The player getting to the fourth point wins the match.

However, if there is a deuce which is when both players have 40 points if a player wins the next game after deuce, the score goes to advantage. If the player in advantage wins the next point, he/she wins the game. However, if the opponent wins, then they get back to deuce.

A single game has six or seven sets, and to win a match, a player requires winning two games. For instance, if a player is up by 6-5, then he/she can win the game by taking the numbers to 7-5. If both the players have equal wins, they head to a tiebreaker. It is an additional set played for seven points. Depending on the competition, a tennis match will have either three or five sets.

The players will start the match by serving the ball. While one player serves the ball diagonally to the opponent, the other is ready to hit back. The set continues until either of the players commits a mistake or when the ball lands in the court where the opponent cannot return.

Each mistake earns the opponent a point, which increases the score from 0 to 40.

The Rules

Now you’ve got a basic understanding of how the game is played here are the rules of the game.

Scoring

The scoring system in tennis is different when compared to other sports. As stated above, players start the match with zero and head to 40 with each scoring point. The scoring is:

  • The first point gives 15.
  • The second point gives 30.
  • The third point gives 40.
  • The fourth point makes the player the winner.

There will be a deuce when the scores are equal, i.e., 40-40. In such a case, a player must win two points consecutively to win the game. Winning a single point earns him/her an advantage. Once the player loses a point in the advantage position, the game returns to deuce.

Winning a match requires playing three or five sets. For the women’s format, the best-of-three format is applicable. The same is relevant for the men’s format for all the ATP tours. However, for a grand slam event, the best-of-five sets are applicable for men’s tennis.

Serving

The critical weapon for a tennis player is serving. It is fundamental to learning the sport, as the game begins with a serve. The following are the key rules:

  • A coin toss determines who serves first.
  • Players change court sides with always the deuce side as first.
  • The server aims to hit the ball into the service box of the opponent diagonally.
  • The player should not move his/her feet ahead of the baseline before the serve.
  • If a contestant fails to land the ball in the opponent’s court, the umpire treats it as a fault.
  • If the opponent serves a fault, the player can use the second serve. If there is another fault, the player loses a point.
  • If the ball hits the top of the net and lands in the opponent’s service box, there is no fault. However, if the ball lands anywhere else, it is a fault.
  • There is no position to serve the ball. However, it is essential to stand outside the baseline diagonally across the server.
  • After serving, the play is in motion unless there is a fault or the ball lands outside the court.

General Play

The following are the necessary for a player to score a point.

  • It is not possible to hit the ball twice.
  • The player must hit the ball before it makes a second bounce.
  • The player must hit the ball within the boundaries of the court to ensure continuity of the play.
  • If the ball hits the boundary line or any part of it, it is “in.”
  • The player should avoid touching the net with their body or racket to prevent loss of a point.

Betting on Tennis

Tennis betting requires you to learn the odds that define the winning amount placed by a bettor. It also helps have some knowledge of the game as this will help you predict a better outcome. You will find the tennis odds conducted in three different ways, which are:

  • Fractional: It is a popular format in the U.K. and Ireland.
  • Decimal: The odd is widespread across the southern hemisphere and Europe.
  • Moneyline: It is popular in North America.

Irrespective of the knowledge that a person or bettor has about tennis, the game is always open to human errors. Sports betting will never be a science to have an exact outcome that you can always precict. Nonetheless, the probability laws do help in determining the result of a bet that reduces a loss.

Meaning of Betting Odds

Learning about the tennis betting market is crucial, and so does the meaning of the tennis betting odds. For instance, you will come across a player listed as the odds of 1.75 in winning the Grandslam. What does this mean? The odds represent the possibility of an occurrence and its outcome.

The 1.75 odds quoted by the bookmaker reflect the chances of the player winning the tournament. Odds are calculated using data that the bookies collect and how much money has been gambled on that particular outcome.

The following formula can be used to get a percentage number of probability from the bookmakers quoted odds.

Implied probability = 1/decimal odds

In the case of 1.75 winning odds, the probability becomes 1/1.75 = 0.5714 or 57.14%.

When you have the data and understanding about the probability of winning a match by a player, you will have more of a chance of being successful when placing bets on a tennis betting site.

Tennis Tournaments

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) overlooks all the tennis events, including beach tennis. It has over 211 national tennis associations and 6 regional associations. It administers and regulates the sport, organizes competitions, and develops and promotes the sport.

It partners with the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) to organise the competitions. However, the ITF remains and organizes grand slams, the Davis Cup, the Fed Cup, and other events.

The Big Events

Learning about the significant events of tennis helps you know about the players. It further makes it simple for you to make predictions and estimate the outcome of a game. Let us look at the prestigious tournaments that offer exciting prize money along with fame.

Australian Open

It is the opening grand slam of a calendar year, and players play on Australia’s hard courts. The Melbourne complex has hosted most of the matches since 1988. It became the first venue for boasting many first-of-a-kind innovations.

With the temperatures reaching 110-degree Fahrenheit, the venue adopted the “extreme heat policy” after much criticism from players. The winning prize is not an issue, as the winner heads home with AUD$ 3,700,000.

French Open

Most of the players head to Paris, France, to participate in the French Open in May and early June. Players will play the matches on clay courts, making it a challenging task for players. The court is responsible for higher bounce and slowness, which results in longer rallies.

The title offers the lowest prize money for a Grand Slam at €2,100,000.

Wimbledon

Several players and fans consider Wimbledon as the highpoint of tennis. Because of its nature and history, the tour is unique from the rest. It involves several traditions, making it English and a unique event. Players bow to the royal family seated in the Royal Box before the start of the play. You have to compete in all white. You will have Gentlemen’s and Ladies events than men’s or women’s events, and the winner of the event will pocket €2,200,000 along with silverware.

U.S Open

The U.S Open starts in August and coincides with the Labor Day weekend. It has roots in the U.S. National Championship owing to its nature of being one of the oldest tournaments. It moved to a permanent hard court after playing first on grass and clay.

Unlike the Australian Open hard courts, the courts in the USA produce less bounce. The winner of the US open will take home $3m in prize money.

Tour Tennis

Although the grand slams are the crown jewels in tennis, there are other prizes that players can win from participating in different events. The WTA and ATP follow a similar structure but have minute differences.

Men’s Tennis

The men’s tennis or the ATP tour has three levels: 1000 series, 500 series, and 250 series. As the name speaks for itself, the Masters 1000 series contains a year’s nine events and concludes with the finals featuring top-eight players. The 500 series has eleven tournaments and offers much more when it comes to prize money. For example, the winner of the Dubai championship pockets two million dollars and 500 points. The 250 series is suitable for amateurs or those who like to improve their rankings to enter the big events.

Women’s Tennis

The Premier events are prestigious in the women’s category and have three categories: Premier Mandatory, Premier 5, and Premier. You may not want to participate in Premier Mandatory, as it is an event held together with the ATP. However, it does offer excellent prize money and ranking. The Premier 5 will host five events, while the Premier will have twelve tournaments.

Davis Cup and Fed Cup

Both the Fed Cup and Davis Cup are annual events and add an international flavour to tennis. The Davis Cup sees the men battling for their country while the women face each other in the Fed Cup. You can consider them as the World Cup of tennis.

Olympic Tennis

Tennis became a permanent sport in the Olympics in 1988. There are five events: men’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s singles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. The surface changes according to the country that is hosting the Olympics.

Betting on Tennis

Tennis betting websites provide the opportunity to place bets and potentially pocket some extra cash for using your tennis knowledge to beat the bookies.

A sports betting site allows you to place a bet on tennis provided you fulfil the legal requirements, which in the UK you must be 18 years or older to place bets at a betting website. Upon validating the account, you are ready to deposit the amount and start betting. The betting experience can change significantly from one site to another.

If you have a great understanding of the game and want to know the types of tennis bets you can place, then read the following information as these are the different bets that you can place in tennis through a tennis betting site:

Outright Betting

In this betting, you will pick a winner for the tournament but not a single match. Depending on the tournament you choose, you may need at least seven victories for the bet to payout.

Match Betting

You will place your bet on a single match of the tennis game. You will pick either the winner or the loser. It is a straightforward method of placing a bet in tennis.

Handicap Betting

If you have little knowledge of American betting, then handicap betting is like spread betting. You will find game handicaps and set handicaps. They are straightforward and offer a good return. You will have a specific number of games or sets in hand to level the gaming field.

You can choose between player A and player B. It will be a handicap advantage for player A, and for player B, it will be a handicap disadvantage. For instance, if Federer runs with a handicap of -8 against John, who has +8, and Federer wins the match with 19-13, you lose the bet because of the handicap.

Over Under Betting

Over-under betting is like handicap betting, but you choose either a game or a set. It is a two-way betting system where you can place your money on games or sets and win when the played games or sets are more or less than offered. Let us use sets for the following example.

For the WTA tour, it is a three-set affair. Therefore, the winning odds offered are under 2.5 or over 2.5. Let us say that Serena is playing Kerber, and you are sure that Serena will win the match in straight sets. In such a case, you will go under 2.5. You assume that the match does not require playing all three sets.

In-playing Betting

In-playing betting is seeing growth among tennis punters. Players can complete a game in a few minutes and a match in under an hour. You will be on your toes but have excellent betting opportunities on several sets and games.

The other betting you can look forward to is simple when you cannot wait for the tournament to end. For example, you can bet on a player to win a particular point or choose a winner for a game. You can also check out set betting, where you can bet on the number of sets played in a match or which player will win.

You will come across a bookmaker offering a double result category, where you can place a bet on two events. An example of this will be placing a bet on player A who will lose the first set but wins the match. You are combining two things to win the bet but at greater odds.

Working of the Tennis Betting Odds

Now that you acquired the basics of tennis, the terms related, and the betting, it is time to explore how betting odds will work. The following will detail how much you will win when you win or win a match.

Profit = (Stake*odds) – stake

Let us assume that you are placing £10 as the betting amount on a player with a winning odds of 1.75. If the player wins the match, your profit will be:

Profit = (10*1.75) – 10 = £7.50

It is a nice win for the amount placed as a bet.

Betting on Matches

Unlike football betting, a tennis player will either win the match or lose. Tennis betting is popular around the grand slam tournaments, with bookmakers offering free bets promotions and offers for particular tournaments.

Bear in mind a few things before placing a bet. The first thing is to consider the form of a particular tennis player. Check out the recent matches and statistics, as it helps reveal the player’s physical condition and whether they are carrying any injuries going into a tennis match.

Additionally, it’s always worth looking at the previous matches between two players. There are instances where a tennis players style causes problems for another player. You may have a player who has won multiple Grand Slam tennis tournaments but always lose to a player even though they have the lesser ability. Having such data makes it possible to pitch for the right value while placing a bet. It will significantly help in Game handicap betting and Set betting.

The next thing to consider as an essential factor is the surface of the court. For instance, matches played on grass are interesting because of their low bounciness. The player’s service plays a vital role in all the grass matches, which quickly defines the result. You will find the grass surface suitable for a few, while others have a playing style that is better suited on hard courts and clay courts.

The odds for a tennis player winning a match can be quite poor, especially as there are no draw results in tennis, so for match results, there are only two possible outcomes for a player, win or lose. Therefore, you will come across a few tennis punters trying accumulator bets to get better odds.

Upsets are rare in tennis especially in the Gran Slams but they do happen from time to time.

Tennis Value Bets

There are many different types of tennis betting stategies that can help you find value in the market. However, the only valuable thing or the fundamental rule is bet only when there is value. The practice applies to all other gambling sports.

When you venture out searching for value bets, you look for instances that you think will have a good return on your investment. For example, assume that Nadal is playing Novak. When you look at the open-era statistics, these two have played against each other a lot more than any other players. When you consider the recent updates, you will note that Novak is winning all the matches he is playing. A bookie is likely to make Novak a favourite with odds of 1.50.

When you consider the probability, the odds place Novak with a 66.67%-win percentage for a match. However, when you research and believe that Novak has a minimum of 75% winning chance, it becomes a value bet.

Understanding Value Bet

The only way you can make profits and make a career out of long-term tennis betting is by placing bets when there is value for a player’s odds. However, understanding how to calculate value bet will provide a more in-depth analysis of the match and help you decide whether to place a bet or wait for the next game.

The calculation is as follows:

Value = (Decimal odds*Assessed probability) – 1

Now, let us assume that Novak is standing with the odds of 1.50 in defeating Nadal. If you research and found that the player has a 75% chance to win the match, do you think the odds of 1.50 will be a value bet? Let us find out:

Value = (1.50*0.75) – 1 = 0.125

When the value is above zero, it falls under the value bet. Let us get back to the Nadal and Novak example. Here, the assessed probability of 75% and the 1.50 odds in favour of Novak winning the match returns a 12.5%. It is an excellent value bet.

The one possible way you can become victorious is by beating a bookie. A more accurate assessment of a match result will help you place the odds favouring the right player. If you can achieve this feat, you will become a successful and long-term tennis bettor.

Betting on Tennis Scores

Betting markets also provide the chance to bet on tennis scores. It falls under the specific form of betting for which the stakes are high, and the probability of success is low. Picking the right score for a particular tennis match is very difficult to do.

Match Correct Scores

Let us see an example to understand how you can bet on the correct score for a match. The following is an example of a match between Rosol and Murray. The correct score betting allows you to predict the final scoreline. For the five-set match between the players, you can pick any of the players as winners and choose the scoreline to complete the game.

Assume that Murray has odds of 1.22 to win a match without allowing his opponent to win a 3-0. If, after your research, you see that the chance for a particular scoreline to appear between the two players, correcting the score betting will make your betting profitable.

Set Correct Scores

Set correct betting allows you to bet on the scoreline of individual sets. Let us take the example of Murray and Rosol. Murray’s odds to win 6-3 is 4, while the odds for Rosol winning 6-0 is 101. You can have different possibilities to bet on the 1st set, with Murray claiming the first set with 6-3 with odds of 4.

The likelihood for Rosol to win the first set with 6-0 is at 101.

Additional Tennis Bets

In-play tennis betting has become popular across different tennis betting websites. It helps a knowledgeable person about the game couple it with the fundamental understanding of betting to rake profits within a few minutes from logging for a live match and bet on individual and sets.

A bookmaker will allow you to bet on in-play with a broad market range, enabling you to explore the different pre-match bets to lock a particular profit so that you can minimize losses if things do not work in your favour.

  • Winning Margin: You can place a bet on the games won by a player in a match and could be an exact figure.
  • Individual Player Totals: You can bet on the individual sets or games played by a tournament player.
  • Tie Break: You can bet on the prospect of whether a set or a match will see at least one tie break.
  • Correct Score After a Number of Games: You can bet on the set score after completing a particular number of games.
  • Not Winning a Set: You can bet whether a player will at the least win a single set.

Tennis Betting Strategy

Tennis betting strategy helps you develop knowledge about a game and the ability to make a value bet. The only thing to consider in such a case is the value of the bet. You must be patient and make smart moves on the value bets to rise to the top. Value betting is tricky because of its nature. It would be challenging to spot the exact difference, whether the game is in your favour or against. You should avoid getting upset because value betting is not about winning big money but identifying opportunities that your research shows about odds that are in your favour.

There are several factors to consider, like any other game, that influence the outcome of a game. However, with proper research, you can choose the ones that are in your favor. The following are a few of the essential things that you can add to your pre-research list:

  • Court Surface: There are three surfaces that players play tennis on: grass, hard-court, and clay-court. Each of the surfaces has advantages and disadvantages. Additionally, players also have a preferred surface. For instance, an eight-time winner on the grass-court can lose two games on the clay court. Therefore, keep in mind the player and his/her ability on the playing surface. Do not count a player if he/she has a history that suggests their poor performance on a particular court.
  • Head-to-Head: Like the favorite surface, players do have opponents that often struggle against even if they possess an excellent skill. The best example is that of Roger Feder and Rafael Nadal. Although Roger holds a significant share of wins in the men’s category, Rafael leads head-to-head with 23-14.
  • The Form Guide: The form guide is crucial to make a near-perfection prediction. You cannot ensure that a player who is down today or has a poor performance in the last two games will continue his form. He/she might change and can win matches.
  • The Statistics: With the number of statistics available today, right from the serving speed to the breakpoints, you can predict a winner for an upcoming match with ease. Ensure to research and calculate value before placing a bet.

Tennis Betting Tips

If you are an amateur and considering a career in tennis betting as a bettor or have fun gambling, learning about the tips is crucial. Only a few websites provide the tips and the traffic to back their claim. Make it a point while searching for the best sports betting site that gives you complete support.

All the tips you receive from the site you register with are from experts and of the highest quality. Most of the sites offer free advice to their members, where you will find the tips for day-to-day matches and upcoming events. You will further learn about the strategy that will help you win regularly.

Conclusion

Tennis is becoming popular worldwide and sees an equal increase in people who are ready to place bets. The game ranks behind horse racing betting and soccer in revenue generation for a bookie in the United Kingdom. Due to this, more and more people are coming forward to taste a piece of success. The game’s intriguing nature, the prize money, the players, and importantly, the excitement make a bet valuable and profitable.

When you possess the knowledge and have statistics in hand, make the right predictions to calculate the value and proceed with a bet that returns good profits on the betting investment. Sign-up with a leading betting site and receive all the support you need in placing bets!
