Derby County will almost certainly face relegation from the SkyBet Championship this season after being hit by a further nine-point deduction, taking their total of points deducted up to 21 overall.

The club’s administrators have agreed the nine-point deduction with the EFL for financial breaches made under the former ownership of Mel Morris, who has left the club in a difficult financial situation.

The Rams initially took a 12-point deduction for entering administration in the first place, as well as the suspended three-point deduction that leaves them on -3 points and rooted at the bottom of the Championship.

It leaves them 18 points shy of safety and Peterborough in 21st and they would currently be 20th in the table if it were not for their sanctions.

A transfer embargo saw manager Wayne Rooney unable to spend any funds on players in the summer, instead relying on free transfers of Phil Jagielka, Ravel Morrisson, Sam Baldock, Ryan Allsop and Richard Stearman.

Trevor Birch, the EFL chief executive said: “The EFL’s objective throughout this ongoing process has been to ensure that the principles of the regulations were upheld on behalf of all clubs.

“In order to assess the sporting sanction that was applicable to apply to these breaches, previous P&S cases have been carefully reviewed and guidance taken from them.

“The EFL has also considered the P&S sanction guidelines as well as mitigation put forward by the club.

“Given the complex circumstances of the case and the various outstanding regulatory issues between the EFL and Derby County, the League is satisfied at the agreed outcome and the sensible approach taken by both parties in negotiating this outcome and in respect of the appeal withdrawal.

“Our focus is to continue to work with the Joint Administrators to assist them in securing a long-term future for the club.”

That has left Derby as major favourites to face the drop this season, falling as short as 1/8 on the Betfair Exchange to be relegated as of today. Below, are the full Championship relegation odds from the same bookmaker.
