The Chilean Undersecretary of Tourism José Luis Uriarte released an official statement stating that the criteria are not yet in place to proceed, after the Chilean casino workforce urged the authorities to allow them to reopen their businesses in the zones currently in phase 1 and 2 of the restarts.
In addition to letters sent by Dreams Casino in Puerto Varas and Marina del Sol in Chillán, Sun Monticello’s employees gathered in the municipality of San Francisco de Mostazal to request their facilities to be reactivated.
Possibility to adjust protocols
The Undersecretary of Tourism assured, however, that the study was underway to decide if it would be possible to adjust the protocols in order to make an exception. He also said they are not in a condition where they can give a straight answer as to when they can reopen.
Uriarte clarified the challenges involved in balancing the need to reactivate the economy while maintaining the welfare of people, although he noted that they are looking at how other nations have fared. “But for the moment, we are not in a position where we can announce something in relation to making these measures more flexible,” he said.
Program to boost tourism
He also stressed that the government was soon to launch a program to boost the tourism industry, saying: “We launched this program through the Production Development Corporation (CORFO), which represents $69m exclusively for the tourism sector and companies with annual sales of $4m.”
At the end of February and through March, businesses interested in obtaining financial assistance would be able to start the process. “These are direct and non-reimbursable transfer funds. It’s a subsidy for these companies and they will also be able to use it as capital,” said Uriarte.
