Spanish Sport To Resume: Racing Start June 3 Football June 11

Sport in Spain is expected to restart next month following the imposed suspension from the novel coronavirus (Covid-19), with horse racing to begin from June 3, followed by football leagues in the country on June 11.

After an announcement from Spain’s National Sporting Council (CSD) and the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), La Liga, Spain ‘s top football division, and second-tier Segunda Division, are set to resume on 11 June.

The first match between Sevilla and Real Betis will be the Seville derby. The season is scheduled to end on July 18th weekend but the CSD said this is subject to change.

In May, Spanish football’s top two divisions laid down a Return to Training Protocol, outlining training schedules and matches to resume as lockout measures in Spain are being relaxed. Players will be screened for novel coronavirus (Covid-19) as part of this programme and the training facilities and stadia will be disinfected.

La Liga was suspended — initially for two matches before the suspension was extended — on March 12, when the Real Madrid squad quarantined after a player from the club’s basketball team tested for the virus positively.

The suspension came with 11 out of 38 games still played and reigning Barcelona champions two points away from Real Madrid at the top of the table while Mallorca, Leganes and Espanyol were remaining in the relegation spots.

Meanwhile, the Asociación de Hipódromos horse racing body said it has been approved to resume racing at the Basque San Sebastian racecourse on 3 June, with racing on other tracks to be followed throughout the region. Two race meetings are to be held regularly until the end of the year, with both to be shown on TV and streamed online.

The association thanked Sociedad Estatal Loterías y Apuestas del Estado (SELAE) for its role in helping to revive racing.

“We want to take advantage of these lines to thank SELAE for its constant communication during these last months and its unconditional support for horse racing in Spain,” it said.

The German Bundesliga returned to play on May 16, while the English Premier League resumes on June 17.
