As software provider Altenar prepares to launch an omnichannel sportsbook offering for its new partner in Congo, Wild-Bets, Director and COO Dinos Stranomitis said: “Everyone is obsessed with Nigeria, but there are other countries in Africa.”
According to Stranomitis, it is critical for African countries to have a sportsbook network that allows customers to place bets both at physical points of sale (POS) and online.
Data plan costs
It’s also important to remember the cost of data plans in African countries, which is why Altenar offers both a “Mobile Full” and “Mobile Lite” version for users to choose from.
“When it comes to internet access for people in those countries, it is not as we experience it in Europe because data is expensive,” said Stranomitis. “That’s why browsers like Opera Mini are popular, with a data saving mode to restrict heavy pages.
“If you want to work in countries such as Congo, you have to develop a lite version of the platform, especially for sports betting, which is more or less text display only.
Two versions for connectivity
Stranomitis then demonstrated how this works for Wild-Bets smartphone users, who choose between two versions – ‘Mobile Full’ and ‘Mobile Lite’ – to begin the process.
This would most likely be determined by their mobile connectivity, whether they can afford a smartphone or more data, or whether they are using free Wi-Fi from a betting shop.
After making their pick, the user can either ‘Place Bet’ if they are logged in and want to bet with their account credit, or ‘Book Bet’ if they prefer to place the bet with a cashier at one of the more than 200 Wild-Bets locations.
‘Book Bet’ will generate a QR code for the cashier to scan if you choose this omnichannel, physical POS option. If the bet is good, the customer pays and earns a receipt, which can be redeemed in cash or credited to the account.
Stranomitis also stated that, in addition to in-store and online betting, there is a third component to the Wild-Bets bet placement process in the form of USSD betting.
For those unfamiliar, this is where a person will bet using a special code dialled into their phone instead of using the internet. The bet’s details are sent to you via text message, and the money is deducted from your phone bill.
Stranomitis sums up Altenar’s current partnership with Wild-Bets, a licenced operator in Congo: “We are really pleased to secure this partnership. I like the fact that it’s a market that many don’t consider as a key target in Africa.
“Africa is not only Nigeria, Kenya or South Africa. Congo has established a licensing process within a regulatory framework, and we are looking forward to getting started with Wild-Bets.”
