Swedish gaming licence holders reported overall second quarter revenue of 5.9bn SEK (2019: 6.17bn SEK), reflecting a decline of 4.1 percent year-on-year.
Released by Spelinspektionen, the country’s regulator, it is noted that the statistics are provisional and mainly based on data from The Swedish tax agency.
Online casino and betting took the lion’s share of the total figure, noting an increase of 3.62 percent to SEK 3.61bn (2019: SEK 3.48bn) followed by state lottery and slot machines which fell 8.48 percent to SEK 1.29bn (2019: SEK 1.41bn).
It was announced at the end of the second quarter that a little more than 52,000 individuals had been suspended for games through Spelpaus.se, the self-exclusion registry of regulators.
Compared with the previous quarter this figure represented a rise of just under four percent. However, it is further noted that the number had risen to just over 55,000 by early September 2020.
In August 2020, a total of 99 companies had active licences on the Swedish market, except non-profit licences, with 72 of those granted the go-ahead for betting and/or online commercial gaming.
Moreover, despite admitting that “there is no actual information on how much is played at gaming companies without a Swedish license,” the Spelinspektionen contained figures determined by H2 Gambling Capital.
The research firm estimates that an estimated sum of between SEK 620 m-732 m was played in companies outside the Swedish licencing system during the second quarter of 2020.
